About the project

The red-breasted goose is a globally threatened species listed in Annex I of the Birds Directive and a priority for LIFE Nature funding; its main habitat, wetlands, is highly vulnerable to climate change, flooding and drought. The project aimed to make a major contribution to the conservation of the species within the EU and along its global flyway. It improved knowledge of threats and migration ecology, worked to reduce mortality from hunting and disturbance, engaged stakeholders in managing key sites and built a flyway-wide monitoring system to assess the international action plan. According to the official results, 13 Natura 2000 sites in Bulgaria and Romania benefited, hunting was restricted at key sites in Kazakhstan and banned in spring around Manych-Gudilo Lake in Russia, and monitoring suggests that the decline of the species has halted.
