Rescue of priority species Jurinea cyanoides in all countries within its range
About the project
Life for Jurinea aims to rescue Jurinea cyanoides, a priority species under the EU Habitats Directive that is on the brink of extinction in the Czech Republic and severely declining in parts of Germany, reduced by habitat loss, invasive species and land-use and climate change to a few fragmented, genetically impoverished populations. A partnership across the Czech Republic, Germany and Ukraine will implement the first comprehensive rescue strategy for the species, combining genetic research, population strengthening and (re-)introductions, large-scale habitat restoration and novel ex-situ conservation. The project aims to increase the Czech population from nine rosettes to 6,100 and the German one by more than 20% to over 300,000 rosettes, expand the number of populations from 2 to 8 in Czechia and from 18 to 22 in Germany, and restore more than 100 hectares of habitat. It contributes to the EU Biodiversity Strategy 2030, the EU Pollinators Initiative and the Nature Restoration Law, and engages local communities through citizen science and «Rescue Planting» in gardens.

Ukrainian participation
According to the official summary, Ukrainian populations of Jurinea cyanoides will serve as a critical genetic reservoir, and the project includes knowledge transfer to Ukraine. The Ukrainian partner is the Rivne Regional Organisation of the Ukraine Nature Conservation Society.
