LIFE-RENEW
From Post-disaster Recovery to Sustainable Reconstruction – Building Back Better for Climate Change Mitigation and Adaptation
About the project
Recent disasters in Europe show the need for reconstruction strategies that advance climate neutrality, strengthen adaptation and resilience, protect biodiversity, improve circularity and promote a just transition, yet most countries lack adequate pre-disaster reconstruction preparedness. LIFE-RENEW develops a governance framework for the sustainable reconstruction of the built, natural and socio-economic environment after disasters, in line with the EU RESTORE Regulation and the «Build Back Better» and «Build Back Greener» concepts. Its flagship output, the Public Policy Handbook for Sustainable Post-Disaster Reconstruction, links climate and environmental policy with disaster management, and pilot Sustainable Reconstruction Plans are co-designed with authorities and communities. An open online training programme will certify a European community of practitioners, and the «Build Back Better Practitioners & Regions Network» will secure the project's legacy and replication.
Ukrainian participation
Ukraine is named in the official summary among the regions, alongside Thessaly, Valencia, Kurzeme, Tuscany, Bucharest and Flanders, where the project will deliver additional support on nature-based solutions, sustainable soil management, circular construction, just energy transition and efficient water use. The Ukrainian partner is the Institute of Climate-Smart Agriculture of the National Academy of Agrarian Sciences of Ukraine.
