Thermal renovation of a brick building in Nizhyn and technology transfer
About the project
Soviet-era apartment blocks were designed to last 20–25 years, yet most remain in use without major renovation; in Ukraine about 85% of the pre-1990 housing stock has poor energy efficiency and uses about twice as much energy per apartment as comparable stock in EU countries with a similar climate. The project addresses inefficient energy use and construction waste by carrying out a lighthouse renovation in Nizhyn with prefabricated panels, through an inclusive decision-making process with the building's co-owners, and by assessing the use of local bio-based materials and recycled war-related construction waste. As no renovations based on prefabrication and bio-based materials have previously been carried out in Ukraine, the project aims to pioneer this approach, applying lessons from similar projects in Estonia and recent changes in Ukrainian energy efficiency law. It targets a 75% reduction in the pilot building's energy consumption, four training programmes for building managers and construction professionals, and renovation guidelines and policy recommendations for scaling up.
