About the project

SMARTER4EU set out to launch new green finance programmes in the EU and candidate countries by creating operational, self-sustaining Green Homes and Green Mortgages programmes in Portugal, Spain and Ukraine. It built on the Horizon 2020 project SMARTER Finance for Families, which introduced such programmes in 12 European countries, and shared tools, training and guidance with Moldova, Georgia and Croatia to help them form their own bank partnerships. The project drew on the EU Taxonomy on Sustainable Activities, growing demand for green finance and central bank guidance on climate risk management. It aimed to show that the partners' green home certification systems, which already meet and exceed the Taxonomy's energy performance requirements, are fit to assess buildings for discounted green finance and to test the "Do No Significant Harm" requirement.
