About the project

The Renewable Energy Directive requires Member States to speed up renewable energy permitting and to prioritise artificial and built surfaces, yet barriers linked to site selection and spatial planning receive less attention and artificial land is often deprioritised in favour of greenfield investment. LIFE REALS aims to ensure that by 2028 permit-granting authorities and related bodies in Bulgaria, Hungary, Romania, Spain and Ukraine have the knowledge and capacity to overcome permitting barriers and market constraints and to ensure social inclusion in onshore wind and solar deployment on artificial land surfaces, with results extended to at least seven further EU Member States. The project builds an integrated knowledge base with spatial data and policy analysis, runs national and European expert groups, training series and an online knowledge hub, and aims to raise the awareness of 1 million citizens of a low-conflict energy transition.
